Holy bus ride from hell yesterday. I left Coyhaique at 7 in the morning and 15 hours worth of bumpy dirt roads got me into Chaitén last night. Camping didn´t work out so I slept in a bed for the first time in a week, kinda odd but comfortable, let´s not make it a habit though Steveo. Chaitén´s a pretty cool little port town, I bummed around this morning admiring the imposing mountain backdrop. A lot of that part of Aysén is temperate rain forest, I´m stoked on coming back in a few years and hiking through a bunch of it. The boat for Chiloé hoisted anchor about 1:30 this afternoon and hauled fucking ass across the bay, apparently we were traveling something like 70 knots, not sure how fast that is in km/h but man it felt fast as shit standing on deck. About an hour and a half later we landed at Quillón where I was for only an hour until the bus pulled out for Chonchi, where I am now. I asked at the bus station when the next bus to Chonchi left and was surprised to hear "4:30pm." Coming from Aysén where bus routes at this time of year leave all of 2 times a week, it was odd to suddenly be spoiled with multiple daily service again. On pavement, too! So Chonchi sits right on the ocean, although here it´s a bay because it´s in between the island and the mainland kinda like how an armpit is in between the bicep and the ribcage, although this bay is much prettier than an armpit. Anyway, it´s all foggy and dark and pretty out right now, if I´m up to it I´ll go wander the streets a bit later but don´t bet on it. The owner of this here hostel´s gonna give me the lowdown on a 2 day hike I can start out on tomorrow if the weather holds up which is anyone´s guess since Chiloé´s so famous for raining all the time. But man oh man it´s so beautiful. The sun went down during the hour long busride from Quellon to Chonchi, I just sat staring out the window watching the countryside in awe, soooo beautiful. Speaking of the busride, I had to check my back to make sure someone hadn´t pasted a sign that said "People with small babies SIT NEXT TO ME!" because I was sitting in my fine window seat on the half empty bus when this asshole with his small child sits right fucking down next to me. I first slowly turned to examine the other half of the bus where nobody seemed to be sitting, then when he didn´t get my drift to go there I picked up my things and went there myself. Do I look like I really like small children or something? Doesn´t the splotchy facial hair and generally unkempt appearance make them want to stay away? Eh, oh well.
So I´m looking at about 4 more nights on the island before I hightail it to Bariloche, then as we all know back to good ol´ polluted Santiago. Can´t wait.
